Do I Need to Prepare My A/C for Winter?

2. Clean Out and Inspect

The next thing that you’ll want to do is clean out the A/C unit and inspect it for any damage. Typically, there will be a lot of debris in and surrounding the unit. Once you remove physical debris, use a hose or soap and water to gently remove dirt and dust. Allow the unit to dry fully. 

During the cleaning process–or once it’s been completed–make sure you inspect the unit for any damage. Damage might include frayed wires, rust, cracks, and more. If you notice anything, call a professional.

3. Cover and Insulate

Finally, the last thing that you’ll need to do after the air conditioning unit is shut off, cleaned out, and inspected, is to cover the A/C unit with a cover that is both waterproof and that will help to insulate the unit. Depending on the cover you use and its quality, you may consider adding additional insulation. Any exposed pipes and wiring will likely benefit from additional insulation.
